With an array of mouthwatering meat, farm-fresh ingredients and freshly-caught fish all widely available just an energetic salmon leap away from their eateries, where do you even begin to choose?

That delectable decision will be yours as you peruse their menus. Thankfully, our local chefs have done some of the work for you, picking out signature dishes made using some of their favourite tastes of Mid-Ulster.

Fresh from the depths of Lough Neagh

Lough Neagh — the biggest lake in the UK and Ireland — is a vast and rich larder. Its entire western shoreline laps against Mid Ulster, so there’s no better place to start to Taste Mid Ulster for yourself.

At the Glenavon House Hotel, in Cookstown, Lough Neagh pollan is fried in sumptuous tempura batter and served over Irish soda bread baked at McGlaughlin’s Bakery — two miles up the road — with rocket (grown a little over 30 miles away by Scott's Farm Shop & General Store when in season), balsamic vinegar and lemon mayo.

Sample Lough Neagh eels at Friel’s, a historic bar and restaurant in Swatragh, just 15 miles from the very spot where the eels are fished. Your sides arrive courtesy of the rich soil of the Sperrin Mountains, with potatoes and vegetables — from Rock Farm Produce, in Magherafelt — cooked in a garlic and white wine cream sauce and topped with a grilled Tirkeeran cheese, handmade in the Sperrins by Dart Mountain Cheese.

You’ll find more local cheese at Deli on the Green, in Dungannon, where Fivemiletown Goat’s Cheese is served with pickled beetroot and poached pear from a local farmer, mixed leaves, sesame seeds, sourdough croutons, crushed hazelnuts and a pear ketchup.

Produce from the pastures of the Sperrins

The lush greenery of the valleys and foothills of the Sperrin Mountains makes for exceptionally good grazing, which in turn produces succulent meat. After being entrusted to some of our highly-skilled and long-established local butcheries, it will be ready for your plate.

Like at The Valley Hotel, in Fivemiletown, where you can taste Daube of Mill Dam Flax Fed Irish Beef, with pomme puree, caramelised shallots and a port and red wine reduction.

Any of the delicious meat you try at The Old Thatch Inn, in Castledawson, including the chicken and steak pieces that are sautéed with onion and mushroom for its signature dish, will have come from McAtamney's, a local, family-run butchery business founded in 1933, while the vegetables are also sourced from a local supplier.

At Mary's Bar and Restaurant, in Magherafelt, you can soak up some local flavours in the meat supplied by Buchanan’s of Upperlands. Try Buchanan's 8oz ribeye burger, made from local beef and topped with Buchanan’s peat-smoked William Grant & Co bacon, crispy bone marrow, watercress and Mary’s ketchup, with triple-cooked chips on the side.

Or if you want a good look at your dinner before it is cooked, try The Tailor's House, in Ballygawley, where the Quinn’s Butchers’ sirloin — served with bone marrow butter chunky chips, beer-battered onion rings and Bushmills peppercorn cream — will probably be visible through the butcher’s shop window, approximately 20 paces across Main Street.

Locally grown hearty spuds and flavour-packed microgreens

You'll find more fresh, locally grown ingredients at The Gables Restaurant, Dungannon, which serves vegetables from Stanley Frew & Sons, just eight miles away. Try the delicious parmentier potato, mushroom, shallots and peas with seared breast of Grange Farm duck and cranberry pan gravy for a simple but incredibly flavoursome taste experience.

Just down the road at The Food Doc, Grange Farm’s poached egg, avocado and rocket will be among the fillings in an innovative, healthier take on the traditional breakfast bap. You'll also find Kerrigan's Craft Butchers' turkey sausages and locally-grown Mid Ulster Microgreens inside your bourbon bap.
