Perfect golf breaks to a tee

Play some of the best golf courses in Ireland during your visit to Mid Ulster. Test your game on holes designed by Open Championship winner Darren Clarke or take on courses named among the top 100 golf courses in Ireland. If that sounds like your sort of golf holiday, you’ll be following in the golf shoe steps of the legendary Seve Ballesteros, who played golf in Mid Ulster at the peak of his career.

Northern Ireland has a rich golfing heritage, and so does Mid Ulster. The 2011 Open Championship champion Darren Clarke was born here. Dungannon Golf Club course in his hometown of Dungannon is a beautifully manicured golf course partly designed by Clarke himself. Among the holes designed by the Dungannon native and club member is the signature hole at the 9th: a challenging 159-yard par 3 with an elevated tee and a two-tiered green protected by a ribbon lake water trap.

Best golf breaks in Ireland

Mid Ulster’s lush greenery certainly lends itself to the game of golf and in some places our mountainous landscape has been tamed to create beautiful golf courses. The magnificent Moyola Park Golf Club is considered one of the best parkland golf courses in Ireland and was named by Irish Golf Digest as one of the best 100 golf courses in Ireland.

Five-time major winner Seve Ballesteros is among those to have played at Moyola Park. The legendary Spanish golfer played an exhibition match on the Castledawson course in 1980. Ballesteros was world number one at the time and fresh from winning the 1980s Masters Tournament at Augusta.

Nine-hole golf courses

If you’re not officially on a golf break, but would like to squeeze some golf into your visit to Mid Ulster, one of our nine-hole courses might be just what you need. Clogher Valley Golf Club, in Fivemiletown, is a challenging nine-hole course, while Aughnacloy Golf Club offers nine holes and 18 tees. Get an extra hole in at the 10-hole, Frank Ainsworth-designed Ronan Valley Course, near Magherafelt.

Links golf in parkland territory

Although all of Mid Ulster’s golf courses are parkland courses, we can offer a little slice of links golf holiday with the help of the ultimate water hazard: the 151 square miles of Lough Neagh. Holes at Gracelands Traad Ponds Golf Course, on the western shore of Lough Neagh, just outside Ballyronan, sometimes play like a links course due to the weather conditions and sandy landscape around the UK and Ireland’s biggest lake.

There’s a wealth of more traditional parkland courses at your disposal, including the historic Killymoon Golf Club in Cookstown.
