Uncover the Tragic Tale of the Hannah Shipwreck at Friels and Gorta Visitor Centre, Swatragh
On Thursday, 1st May, join us at Friels Bar & Restaurant for a captivating evening that intertwines local history with the harrowing story of the Hannah shipwreck, one of the most tragic maritime disasters of the An Gorta Mór.
Historian Úna Walsh will recount the tragic tale of the Hannah shipwreck.
The Hannah carried approximately 180 passengers, mostly agricultural laborers and their families, from Warrenpoint and Newry to Quebec City. On its journey, it struck an iceberg.
At the heart of Gorta Swatragh's Famine Story is Kieran Tuohy's stunning sculpture commemorating the Hannah. This haunting sculpture depicts the Hannah lying at the ocean's depths, a silent witness to its tragic end. Kieran's ability to evoke raw emotion through his craft ensures that this chapter of history is preserved with dignity and reverence.
Explore Gorta's Famine Story visitor center, which showcases famine-era artifacts like an original soup kitchen pot used by Dr. Mooney to save lives during An Gorta Mór.
