About

Join in the celebrations at Benburb Priory as they celebrate there 75th anniversary.

Benburb Priory is ideally located on the banks of the River Blackwater which defines the border between the counties of Tyrone and Armagh. The history of the site stretches back to 1561 when Shane O'Neill (Shane the Proud) built the first iteration of what would become known as Benburb Castle.  In 1610, the Benburb estate was granted to Sir Richard Wingfield (The Powerscourt Family) which the family held until the 1880s.  At this time the estate was put up for auction and was purchased by James Bruce a wealthy businessman from Belfast.  On purchasing the estate, James Bruce built the Manor House and stables.

Benburb Priory’s modern history has been defined by the Order of The Servants of Mary, who came to Benburb from Chicago to establish the first Servite Priory on the Island of Ireland.

The Library and Museum including its Exhibition, covers the development of the Priory estate with the O'Neills, Wingfield/Powerscourt family,  James Bruce and the Order of The Servants of Mary, including its brief role as a field hospital in World War II.
